The trio kicked off the event by attending a meet and greet show at
Westfield Century City in Los Angeles on Saturday, March 3.

More than 1000 "Hunger Games" fans showed up at the mall over the
weekend to get a chance to meet the stars who play Katniss Everdeen,
Peeta Mellark and Gale Hawthorne in person. Most of them had been
camping out around the location since Friday to be the first in line
when the show opened.

As they arrived to the event, Lawrence, Hutcherson and Hemsworth were
seen posing for photographers and greeting the swarming fans. The three
were all smiles as they took pictures and signed posters for those fans
before beginning a small Q&A session to answer some questions about
the much awaited movie.

After kicking off the 8-city U.S. tour in L.A., each of the trio will
part their ways to attend similar events in some other cities. Hemsworth
will next stop by Atlanta on Tuesday, while Hutcherson will attend the
Chicago show on Wednesday. On the other hand, Lawrence will be in Miami
on Thursday. The tour ends on March 10 in Seattle, where the three
reunite for a last trip to Brookstone before the movie opens wide on
March 23.

An adaptation of Suzanne Collins' bestselling novel, "The Hunger Games"
follows Katniss who replaces his sister Primrose in annual deadly games
sponsored by the Panem government. With the help from mentor Haymitch
Abernathy, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts to survive
in the games. Directed by Gary Ross, the movie is also supported by Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Lenny Kravitz, Stanley Tucci and Wes Bentley.

- Twitter co-founder Biz Stone showed a picture of himself dressed in a
tuxedo with a huge smile on his face, holding hands with his wife, in a
wedding dress, covering her face with her hand.

"This photo was
taken about 30 seconds after I got married," Stone told an audience of
about 1,000 at a luncheon Wednesday at the Palais des congrès. "I look
like the happiest guy and the world, and my wife looks like she made a
big mistake."

In town to speak as the invited guest of the Board
of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal, Stone said businesses and
entrepreneurs need to take pride in their mistakes. If he hadn't, he
never would have created the microblogging site in 2006 along with Jack
Dorsey, Noah Glass and Evan Williams.

He spoke about many of his
failures as an entrepreneur, first as the inventor of a company that
allowed people to send broadcasts to iPods ("we thought we were
geniuses, and it turns out it was called podcasting and people were
already doing it.")

"Failure is great," he said. "It's really
scary, but it's totally worth it, because you can't succeed at these
exponential levels unless you dramatically fail."

Stone even spoke of the initial failures of Twitter.

"When we started it, nobody thought it was a very good idea," he said. "But we kept working on it."

But
he realized he was onto something when he attended the South by
Southwest music and interactive festival in 2007, and saw how people
were using the site to communicate about events taking place there.

"One
person tweeted to tell a few people to meet him at a bar, and in the
eight minutes it took him to walk to that bar, it had filled to capacity
and there was a line out the door," he said.

Twitter, and other
social media tools allow people to communicate instantly. It has
fostered revolutions, as seen in last year's Arab Spring uprisings, and
changed the way companies communicate with their customers. Stone
envisions social media playing a role in uniting the world and making it
a better place.

"The more connected we get through all social
media, the more humanity can move as one," he said. "Maybe I'm just
being hallucinogenically optimistic, but the idea that once we're
connected we'll be able to move together, suggests we'll be able to get a
lot more done in a lot shorter time."

Stone, who is a vegan, said
his goal for any of his enterprises is to help improve the world, make
money and have fun. And he said every company should have a strong
social conscience.

"It just makes good business sense because
consumers and good employees are attracted to products and companies
that care about the world," he said. "If there's a $5-million marketing
budget, maybe, you can spend $4 million bringing clean water to a region
in India, and another million making a big deal about that."

Although
he has spent most of his professional life working for technology
companies, he said he learned many relevant skills in his first job as a
graphic designer.

"I learned creativity is a renewable resource,"
he said. "It's a wonderful way of thinking about challenges, because it
turns work into play. It makes everything fun, and you can always take
another crack at something."

His advice when looking for solutions to a problem is to try to find the most creative, off-the wall idea and see if it works.

Stone,
who is listed as Twitter's creative director, left the company's
day-to-day operations last June and is taking time to launch a new
venture. He's also taking time to spend with his son, Jacob, who was
born in November.

He said he was proud that Twitter hired a
corporate social responsibility employee before it hired its first
salesperson. But even the microblogging site isn't infallible. Last
week, the company came under fire for storing the information from
contact lists of iPhone users for a period of 18 months. The company
later apologized and altered its user agreement.

He said when
companies like Twitter make mistakes, they must confess their errors.
And he said social media is a great way for companies to seem more
approachable to customers.

"I think vulnerability is essential,"
he said. "For so long, companies and brands thought they needed to seem
bulletproof. I think when a brand uses Twitter, they're able to
communicate when they make a mistake. I think when you do things like
that you reveal you're open and honest and willing to change and admit
to your mistakes. I think brands are using it to really build trust with
consumers."

Windows 8 is a very different Windows. We've already seen that it will require Windows users to learn new ways of interacting with their computers,
but there's more to it than that. The way applications work and
interact with each other on the new platform is new and different—and
rather good.

The Windows 8 Consumer Preview comes with a handful of apps pre-installed, with a few dozen more available to download via the Windows Store.
Microsoft has warned that these apps are mere previews, saying in
Barcelona "Now is not a good time to start reviewing the apps, or
listing them, or categorizing them." so we're not going to review
them. But taking a closer look to understand how they work and fit
together will reveal a lot about the way Windows 8 will work.

The preinstalled People, Messaging, and Mail apps in particular
demonstrate the new Windows 8 way of using (and, for developers,
building) apps.

Most instant messaging services have their own notion of a contact
list that's maintained privately by the instant messaging application.
The same is not uncommon for e-mail applications. These applications
build and manage these lists, and have to provide a UI to do that.

The messaging app is very simple, but the basic design seems to work nicely.

Technically, there's nothing preventing this same style of application
development in Windows 8, but the supplied apps don't work like that.
The Messenger and Mail apps have no contacts lists of their own.
Instead, they can call up the People app and let you pick contacts
there.

Windows Phone users will be familiar with the basic concept of the People app, as it's not dissimilar to the People hub from Windows Phone. It aggregates contacts from a wide range of sources into a single unified view.

The Messaging app's snapped view.

Contacts can come from a range of sources: Windows Live/Hotmail,
Twitter, Exchange, Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace (honestly!), and Google.
You can drill down into each contact to find out more about them and
what they're up to—it'll show their latest status updates on their
social networks—or examine their contact data. There's also a top-level
"What's New" page to show all the updates from your contacts, and a "Me"
page that includes notifications and the like. The functionality isn't
as polished as it is in Windows Phone (for example, there are no contact
groups, and there seems to be no ability to fuse different contacts
representing the same people into unified contacts), but it gets the job
done.

All your contacts, aggregated from a bunch of services.

While the social networking features make the People app useful in
its own right, much of the time we don't just want to look at our
contacts—we want to actually do something with them, such as
send them an e-mail or an instant message. We can do this two ways. We
can start in the People app, pick a contact, and then tap their e-mail
address or IM details, or we can start our preferred communications
program, and then initiate a conversation.

Drilling down into the "me" page.

When called into action in this way, the People app appears as a
"picker": a specialized widescreen view that lets you pick contacts from
a list. This way, contacts live inside the People app, and are passed
to Messaging and Mail on an as-needed basis. The calling apps also
indicate what information they want to know, and whether they need
instant messaging-enabled contacts or not; the People app alters the set
of contacts it offers accordingly.

Hit the "to" button...

... and we get the contact picker.

This can open in either multiselect mode (as shown here) or single select mode (used for, say, Messaging).

The
receiving application can either retrieve full contacts (as shown here,
these include thumbnails), or they can specify just a subset of data.

The system is extensible. You can have multiple contact-providing
applications, and they're put into a list so you can switch between
them, though at the current time there aren't many options.

At
the moment the People app is the only thing I have that actually has
contacts. But in principle, this could offer all sorts of other options.

These fixed-purpose, well-defined links between applications use a
system Microsoft calls "contracts": specific APIs that applications can
offer each other and register with the system. Contact picking isn't the
only contract; applications can offer similar pickers for loading and
saving files, and there are other contracts for other operations, such
as a "share" contract that allows, for example, a link to a webpage to
be shared via e-mail. Android has long used a similar system, which it
calls "intents."

The result is neat little apps that work well with each other, and
provide a level of consistency that Windows has never previously
achieved. It's a different way of using apps, and a different way of
writing them, but the in-box programs show that it's a good way.

The result is neat little apps that work well with each other, and
provide a level of consistency that Windows has never previously
achieved. It's a different way of using apps, and a different way of
writing them, but the in-box programs show that it's a good way.

iPad 3 rumor roundup: everything we think we know

Apple's special media event—one
that many believe to be for the next-generation iPad—is now mere days
away. By this time next week, we'll know once and for all how many of
those pesky pre-event rumors were true and which ones were made up by
"optimistic" sources.

Because there are so many elements to consider for the
as-yet-unannounced iPad, which is colloquially being referred to as the
"iPad 3," we thought we'd round them up in one spot to talk about what
seems most plausible.

"Retina" display

The rumor that has probably</...

The rumor that has probably received the most coverage
and had the highest number of "confirmations" across reliable
publications has been the one that states the iPad 3 will have a
high-resolution "retina" display similar to the one in the iPhone 4 and
4S. An iPad with a retina display has actually been rumored since before
the iPad 2 was introduced a year ago, and some observers were
disappointed when the iPad 2 appeared with the same resolution as its
predecessor.

Numerous sources—and evidence found within the iOS SDK itself—hint
that the iPad is destined to join the "retina" display clique this time
around, though. What does that mean for prospective iPad 3 buyers? The
original and second-generation iPads both had a screen resolution of
768x1024, but all signs point to the iPad 3's resolution being
1536x2048—double the number of pixels in both directions for a pixel
density of 260ppi. As we wrote last year, this pixel density isn't exactly the same as the iPhone 4, which sits at 326ppi, but it's close enough to look nearly as sharp to the naked eye.

Higher megapixel camera(s)

The camera rumors haven't been quite as prolific as those of the
"retina" display, but a consensus is slowly building that the next-gen
iPad will indeed have a better camera or two. Rumors from the beginning of the year claimed the front- and rear-facing cameras would both get an upgrade, with a later rumor
suggesting the rear-facing camera might go up to 8 megapixels. (It's
worth noting that the camera currently in the iPhone 4S is also 8
megapixels.)

We don't know a lot of people who use their iPads for photography à la the iPhone 4S, but perhaps that's because the iPad 2's camera
isn't much to write home about. When we reviewed the device last year,
we were left unimpressed, but perhaps Apple is looking to expand
people's use of the front- and rear-facing cameras for things like
FaceTime and other casual camera use. We would hardly be surprised to
see some kind of camera bump this year, even if only to help keep the
iPad's specs from getting too stale.

Processors

For many Ars readers, the iPad 3's rumored processor bump is one of
the more interesting aspects of the new device. The processor is also
one of the more talked-about elements while also being one of the most
inconsistent.

Earlier rumors suggested Apple might move to a quad-core design for its next-gen mobile processor—rumors that were bolstered by evidence found within Apple's Xcode
late last year. Newer reports, however, indicated that the processor
might retain the same dual-core processor as the one in the iPad 2 with
improved Imagination Technologies GPU cores, and the rumored "A5X" could fit that description.
As Chris Foresman wrote last month of the A5X: "The A5 is no slouch in
general processing, but improved graphics processing would be especially
useful if the iPad 3 contains a 2048x1536 pixel 'Retina' display."

Even newer reports,
however, suggested that Apple might be developing an improved,
dual-core "A5X" professor alongside a quad-core A6 processor after all.
Hints were buried within the developer previews of iOS 5.1 that Apple is
working on both processors at the same time, indicating that it might
have plans for a lower-powered iPad alongside a higher-end iPad 3. Or,
the A5X could be destined for something else entire, like a revamp of
the Apple TV.

LTE

Up until now, the iPad has always come in WiFi-only and WiFi+3G flavors, but the latest rumors out of proven publications like Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal
have pointed towards 4G/LTE support in the next-gen iPad. If true, it
would make the iPad 3 the first of Apple's mobile products to make use
of these high-speed networks being built by Verizon and AT&T.

We recently made case for why
the iPhone, hasn't gained LTE support. For one, LTE is currently
largely limited to the US, and although Apple has made some exceptions
to this policy, it generally frowns upon manufacturing too many
variations of the same product for different markets. But the iPad may
be different in this regard. Because it's not a phone and therefore has a
lower volume of sales (Apple sold 15.43 million iPads last quarter
compared to 37.04 million iPhones), Apple can afford to take bigger
US-centric risks like adding LTE support to the iPad.

And the timing makes sense: both AT&T and Verizon are vastly
expanding their 4G networks this year, so extra-high-speed data should
be easier for many Americans to access by year's end. Packing LTE into
the next generation of the iPad would begin to put more pressure on the
two carriers' 4G networks, but not iPhone-level pressure just yet.

Form factor

Here's some bad news for reverse-sizequeens: multiple rumors have now stated that the iPad 3 will be ever-so-slightly thicker than the iPad 2. The latest numbers
put it at 0.81mm thicker than the iPad 2—yes, less than one
millimeter—but the change will undoubtedly frustrate those who always
count on Apple's devices to get thinner over time, not thicker.

As for why Apple might choose to make the iPad 3 thicker
than its predecessor, it would likely be due to all the factors we've
just discussed. Faster processors and higher-speed LTE chips take up
space, as do higher-quality cameras. On the upside, 0.81mm (assuming
that's the final number) is small and probably won't even make a
difference for most iPad cases and accessories if you've already
invested money in them. Hard cases might be a problem, though.

Miscellaneous

In addition to the major rumors we discussed above, there has been a
peppering of various miscellanea related to the iPad 3. Some of them are
a bit more plausible than others, though.

On the "more plausible" side is Siri support: ever since Apple's
virtual personal assistant was introduced with the iPhone 4S in October,
people have been talking about Apple bringing Siri to the iPad. Apple currently limits Siri to the iPhone 4S
and the reasoning is believed to be due to processor capabilities
(though before Apple bought Siri, it was available on much older
hardware). Either way, the iPad 3 would no doubt have the same or better
hardware than the iPhone 4S, so if that's the reason to limit Siri, it
almost surely wouldn't apply for the iPad 3.

In the middle is an alleged price increase
that might come with the next-gen iPad. Rumor has it that the iPad 3
will see an increase of $80 for WiFi-only models and $70 for WiFi+3G
models over the current iPad 2, putting it at a theoretical $579 for the
WiFi model. We don't actually believe the sourcing on this rumor—it
comes from what amounts to the Chinese version of Twitter—but we think
it's possible only because it's not impossible.

And finally on the least likely end of the scale is the so-called
"iPad mini." This one has been buzzing in the background for over a
year, but claims of a 7-inch iPad recently sprung out of Technology Business Research analyst Ezra Gottheil once again. Even more recently, DigiTimes claimed that Apple was planning a 7.85-inch iPad for late 2012.

Former Apple CEO Steve Jobs repeatedly trashed the idea of a smaller
iPad, however, saying that the current iPad's screen size is ideal for
most users. That doesn't mean Apple hasn't considered it, but for the
time being, a 7-inch iPad seems unlikely during a time when Apple can
barely keep up with iPad demand as it is already, with a 10-inch screen.

Conclusion

As with all unannounced products, there's no way to know which
elements are true and which aren't until Apple goes on stage to tell us.
Still, when there's smoke, there's fire—for the most part, rumors that are frequently reported by publications with reliable sources end up coming true at one point or another.

What do you believe will be included in the iPad 3 specs?
And do you think there will be an iPad 3 at all? Sound off in the
comments, or hold your breath until next Wednesday when we'll be
covering the Apple event live.

Could Hackers Hijack the Space Station?

I once had a chance to hijack the Voyager
spacecraft — or at least that's how it seemed. It was back in 1999 and I
was in a red-brick building on an unremarkable stretch of Madre Street
in Pasadena, a little outpost of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL)
that was home to the few lonely consoles still monitoring the twin
Voyager spacecraft. Even at that point, the ships had long since
completed their primary missions. Voyager 1 was 6.51 billion miles from
Earth; Voyager 2 was 5.02 billion, and while they were (and indeed,
still are) beaming back information about the deepest reaches of the
solar system, it was hardly the kind of picture-rich data-stream that

I once had a chance to hijack the Voyager
spacecraft — or at least that's how it seemed. It was back in 1999 and I

requires a full-blown mission control team to manage. So it was down to
just a console or two on Madre Street, one of which was unattended and
bore a bright orange sticker with the all-caps notice: "CAUTION. THIS IS
A LIVE VOYAGER CONSOLE. DO NOT TOUCH."

I didn't touch — and I would have hardly known what kinds of
mischievous signals to send the ships even if I had. But there are
plenty of people around with a decidedly more criminal bent, and these
days, they've got the know-how to strike. Worse, they don't even have to
go to Madre Street or any other part of NASA's vast web of control
centers anymore. They can — and increasingly do — reach into the space
agency's systems from anywhere in the world.

(MORE: The Space Station: Will NASA Abandon Ship?)

In
detailed testimony delivered on Thursday to a House subcommittee on
investigations and oversight, NASA Inspector General Paul Martin painted
a disturbing picture of an agency under electronic siege, with hackers
from China, Italy, the U.K., Nigeria, Portugal, Romania, Turkey, Estonia
and the U.S. itself attempting increasingly brazen attacks on
operations both on the ground and in space. The network controlling the
space shuttles was cracked, and while those ships have since been
mothballed, the International Space Station (ISS) remains a fat and
floating target. In perhaps the most alarming portion of Martin's
testimony, it was revealed that just under a year ago, a laptop was
stolen, and on its hard drive were critical algorithms used to command
the ISS.

Overall, in 2010 and 2011, there were a breathtaking 5,408
computer security incidents involving either unauthorized access to NASA
systems or the insertion of malware. In 2011, there were 47 major
instances of hacking, 13 of which were successful — at least to the
extent that they somehow affected the operation of the targeted
computers. In one case, "the attackers had full, functional control
over...networks," Martin said in his official statement to the
committee.

Bloggers and much of the rest of the web have been all over the
story, anxious as ever to pounce on any new incident of perceived NASA
fecklessness. And while the report is serious, you can be pretty sure
we're at no risk of seeing some basement hacker send the ISS pinwheeling
into solar orbit. The systems are just too complex and redundant for
that. What's more, NASA is doing a creditable job of working to contain
the problem — and at the same time providing a possible template for
other government agencies facing cybersecurity threats of their own.

(PHOTOS: Iconic Images of the Earth from Space)

One
of the main reasons for NASA's particular vulnerability to cyberattack —
apart from the fact that is has so many computers and is uniquely
dependent on communicating with people and machines very, very far away —
is that is has such a multiplicity of headquarters and centers. This
was by design and dates from the 1950s, when the agency was first
formed.

Rather than building NASA from scratch, Washington officials
simply went cherry-picking from among existing tech labs, military bases
and missile sites around the country — Ames in California, Canaveral in
Florida, Huntsville in Alabama, Goddard in Maryland. The only major
NASA center built de novo was in Houston, and that was the doing of
Lyndon Johnson, who was Vice President at the time and wanted his home
state to get the biggest, sweetest NASA plum of all. This kind of
distributed structure did limit start-up costs and help in the
dissemination of science, but it left the NASA of half a century later
with a lot of weak spots in a security system that has to weave so many
disparate servers and databases together.
